What are wake windows?

Wake windows refer to the periods of time that a baby or young child can stay awake before needing to take a nap or go to bed. These windows vary depending on the child's age and developmental stage, but they are important to pay attention to in order to ensure that your child is getting the appropriate amount of sleep they need for healthy growth and development. For newborns, wake windows are typically only 45 minutes to an hour, as they need to sleep frequently throughout the day and night. As babies grow and develop, their wake windows gradually increase. By six months old, most babies can stay awake for around two hours before needing a nap, and by one year old, they may be able to stay awake for three to four hours at a time. It's important for parents and caregivers to pay attention to their child's cues and signals to determine when they are tired and ready for sleep. Some common signs that a child is ready for a nap include rubbing their eyes, yawning, fussiness, and decreased activity level. By understanding wake windows and paying attention to your child's sleep needs, you can help ensure that they are getting the restful sleep they need for healthy growth and development.
